A DRIVER accused of killing a woman in Highbridge made his first crown court appearance today. 

Christopher Harris, 34, of no fixed address, will next appear at Bristol Crown Court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on March 2.

Harris has been charged with the murder of talented artist Laura Biss, 34, who allegedly died after being hit by a car on Burnham Road on Saturday, January 20.

He was not brought to court and appeared before Judge Geoffrey Mercer QC for an application for bail hearing in Exeter via video link today. 

There was no application for bail and he was remanded in custody.

The heartbroken family of Highbridge woman Laura Biss have paid tribute to her describing her as 'a fantastic mother' and 'a great sister'.

The body of Laura Biss was found on the B3139 Burnham Road, in Highbridge, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

In a statement published by Avon and Somerset Police, Laura's family said: “Laura was a beautiful daughter, a fantastic mother and a great sister.

"She was sensitive, caring and compassionate and would think nothing of going out of her way to help others.

“She had a great sense of humour which made her very popular. She touched so many people’s lives in a positive way.

“She was also a talented artist, who had a great future ahead of her.

“Words cannot express what her loss means to all her family and friends – we are heartbroken and totally devastated.

“We would like the media to leave us alone at this time to grieve privately.”
