POLICE are clamping down on illegal and anti-social drivers, while drug crime in the Burnham and Highbridge area has tumbled, latest figures reveal.
Sergeant Ian Kennett of Burnham and Highbridge police said he and his team have been targeting the main worries among local people identified at a community meeting in October.
He said five vehicles have been seized since then for either being driven without insurance, or for being driven in an anti-social way.
Sgt Kennett also said police have dispersed a total of 35 vehicles from areas identified as nuisance hot-spots – a scheme he said is proving a huge success.
Meanwhile Sgt Kennett told the Weekly News drug crime figures are falling thanks to a series of successful drug raids in Burnham and Highbridge.
He said: “More recently, four separate arrests have been made for possession of Class C drugs, and intelligence received to the police is that cannabis is now very difficult to buy in Highbridge.”
The local policing team has now pinpointed drug misuse and parking issues as its main priorities in coming weeks.
Sgt Kennett added: “The beat team will continue to work with local partners to tackle these issues and will report back to the community at our next meeting.
“Please take the opportunity to come and speak with your local beat team at the next meeting, discussing any concerns you have in your community.”
The next Police and Communities Together meeting will be held on Thursday, April 15 at 7.30pm at St John’s Hall, Bank Street, Highbridge.
