PEOPLE in Somerset can win prizes and trophies – just for doing a bit of exercise.

Somerset County Council’s public health service has teamed up with the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership, to launch the Work It! 2015 Business Activity Challenge.

Running from March 9 to 20, the Challenge is in three parts.

The Physical Activity Programme involves logging all the sport or physical activity you do (including walking or cycling to work).

The council is even offering to send somebody to your business to take beginner and experienced runners for a few lunchtime or after-work runs to get you started.

Those signing up to The Pedometer Challenge will get a free pedometer to log the number of steps they make each day.

There will be live leaderboards on a website giving details of the top workplaces, teams and individuals.

Finally, individuals and teams can sign up for The Games, at Taunton Vale Sports Club on March 27, from 6pm-8.30pm.

There will be seven-a-side football, netball, badminton and indoor rounders, among other sports.

There will also be games including boccia, lacrosse, short mat bowls and rush hockey.

Elaine Harris, Healthy Workplace Manager at Somerset County Council, said: "You have the option of setting yourself individual targets, tracking your activity and any weight loss and measuring your progress.

"To keep you going, there will be spot prizes and individual and workplace trophies and medals at the end of week six.

"Your business and/or your colleagues can enter either of the first two challenges plus the Games.

"Enter as an individual, department or whole workplace. All of the challenges are free to enter.”

She added: “Businesses will also win by employees becoming fitter and workplace teams joining together in competition will increase morale and staff engagement.”
