FIREFIGHTERS fought a blaze in a commercial property for two hours yesterday evening, Wednesday, May 27.

The fire service received multiple calls to reports of smoke issuing from a unit on Evercreech Way, Highbridge, at 6.13pm.

Four engines were sent to the scene, as well as an aerial ladder platform and water carrier.

Crews had to force their way into the building as there were no key holders on site.

 

 

The specialist incident command unit was also mobilised to the incident from Street for a greater level of command and control.

 

 

 

By shortly after 6.30pm, the officer in charge confirmed two firefighters were in breathing apparatus using one hose reel jet.

Crews reported that the fire appeared to have been caused by an electrical fire and a carbon dioxide fire extinguisher was also being used.

19:06 The incident has been sectorised shortly after 7pm and four breathing apparatus were being used to check for fire spread, along with thermal imaging cameras, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers and hose reel jets.

The electrical company isolated the electric supply to the building.

Fire crews used positve pressure ventilation to clear smoke from the property and liaised with property owners and forklift trucks are being used to remove damaged packaging.

The fire was reported to have been out by 8.20pm and crews left soon after.

 

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said 20% of the unit was damaged by fire, 30% was smoke damaged and 60% heat damage was caused.

The cause is believed to have been accidental.
