A NORTH PETHERTON woman has described the terrifying moment she and her husband came face to face with the Tunisian terrorist who slaughtered 38 people.

Jane and Alan Foster were staying at the Riu Imperial Marhaba where gunman Seifeddine Rezgui opened fire.

The attack in the resort of Sousse left 30 Britons dead.

“It was around 11.45am and we were on the beach on the sunbeds,” Jane said.

“I heard what I thought was fireworks and then I looked up on my left and about 30 or 40 yards away there was a man about 6ft tall and he had a rifle in his hands.

“He just started shooting people.”

Jane told her husband to get down and they hid under the sunbeds.

She added: “It was surreal.

“Some people just ran and others didn’t have the chance to.

“We ran and I hid behind a boat and Alan ran and hid behind a beach hut and then we just ran to another hotel.

“We had to stay there for two hours under lockdown. We couldn’t see what was going on but we could hear it. It was horrendous. We were extremely lucky.”

The couple were due to stay out for a another few days but flew home on the Saturday.

“We just wanted to get home. We’re both shook-up but we’re okay and we’re so lucky to be alive and safe and that’s the main thing.”

Rezgui was shot dead by police, and the Tunisian government has made a number of arrests as they believe he had accomplices who helped him carry out the atrocity.

According to officials, the gunman trained at a Libyan jihadist camp at the same time as the two gunmen who attacked the Bardo museum in Tunis in March, killing 22 people.

Defence Secretary Michael Fallon vowed that those responsible for the massacre would be “tracked down”.
