A JEDWARD lookalike who went into a Chard shop and stole a sex toy, some spot cream and some hairspray did it because he liked to keep himself looking good.

Stephen Joe McQueen was identified by a staff member at Superdrug who recognised his distinctive high quiff, reminiscent of the X Factor pop duo, and told the police.

When he was interviewed he admitted going to the store without any money saying he needed some hairspray and took other items that he needed and had subsequently used.

The 23-year-old, of Essex Close, Chard, pleaded guilty to stealing a Passionate Bullet, a Neutrogena spot cream, hairspray and deodorant worth £13 belonging to Superdrug plc on April 28.

Prosecutor Lucy Coleman said that the team leader of Superdrug in Fore Street saw McQueen enter the store at 2pm.

“She noticed he had a Jedward style haircut which was spikey on the top and then found a packet of paracetamols on the floor and an empty “Passionate Bullet” box on a shelf,” she said.

“CCTV showed the same male with the distinctive haircut selecting the bullet and concealing it in his pocket, and another member of staff also discovered an empty box which should have contained some spot cream.”

The assistant manager recognised the defendant from the CCTV and it was reported to the police, who circulated the video footage, and McQueen was identified.

When he was later interviewed he said he took the items which he intended to use as he had no money on him at the time.

“He said he went there knowing he needed some hairspray and the pleasure bullet was for his own use but said he knew it was stupid and it wouldn’t happen again,” added Miss Coleman.

Defending solicitor Louise Eaves said that McQueen suffered from mental health issues and had been diagnosed with ADHD.

“He takes pride in his appearance and felt the need to get some hairspray and got carried away while in Superdrug,” she said.

“He had stopped taking his medication due to the chaotic lifestyle he was leading and was acting impulsively and not his normal self, but since then his medication has been stabilised.”

The magistrates fined McQueen £7 and ordered him to pay £13 compensation to Superdrug, a £150 court charge and a £20 victim surcharge.
