THE family of a Somerset teenager who died after being hit by a train have described him as "kind, caring, thoughtful and loving".

British Transport Police are not treating the death of Matthew Brittan, 14, as suspicious.

Matthew died in the incident on a level crossing near Weston Milton Station at 4.50pm on Monday (February 1).

Emergency services rushed to the scene but were unable to save his life.

Detective Sergeant Paul Stanley, from BTP, said: “Our thoughts are with Matthew’s loved ones at this difficult time, who have asked for their privacy to be respected as they grieve for their loss.

“They continue to be supported by our specially trained family liaison officers and we are now in the process of preparing a file for the coroner around the circumstances of Matthew’s death.”

In a tribute to the teen, who attended Worle Community School, Matthew’s family said: “Matthew was a kind, caring, thoughtful and loving son, brother and grandson, who will be deeply missed by us all, as well as his many friends.

“We would like to thank everyone for the kind messages we have received since we learned of Matthew’s sudden death and also, to the emergency services for their efforts at the scene.”
