THREE people have today (Friday, April 22) been jailed in connection with the death of a Somerset pensioner.

David Hick, aged 84, died after he was hit by a car as he crossed Cole Road, Bruton, on October 14, 2014.

Today at Bristol Crown Court, two men and a woman have been sentenced for their part in his death.

Robert Finlay, 48 of Rickhayes, Wincanton, had previously admitted careless driving while under the influence of alcohol and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. He has been jailed for 4 years and nine months.

Joseph Breen, 38, of Crowmarsh Gardens, London, and Felicity Wheeler, 33, of Rickhayes, Wincanton, were convicted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice at a trial last month.

Breen has been jailed for three years and Wheeler has been jailed for 18 months.

Detective Inspector Phil Jones of Somerset Investigations said: “We are pleased with the decision of the court today and hope it will go some way to providing some closure for Mr Hick’s family on this terrible episode in their life.

“David, although a retired 84-year-old, loved life and was heavily involved the local community of Bruton and his infectious smile and colourful personality is missed by all.

“His death and the impact it had on the local community, inspired us to track down those responsible although it became a complex enquiry because the vehicle which killed David Hick had been destroyed.

“Robert Finlay, the court decided, took the wheel of his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and then tried to cover up the offence.

"His two co-defendants – his partner Felicity Wheeler and family friend Joseph Breen – also tried to cover up what had happened.

“In leaving an 84-year-old man dying in the road and driving off without stopping, all three share the blame of prematurely stealing the life of David Hick, turning a tragedy for his family into a nightmare.

“We hope that this case will send out a strong message to all drivers that they should not drink and drive; that alcohol can and does impair the ability to drive; and can result in tragedy.

"We remain committed to track down offenders and seek to bring them before the courts.

“We would like to thank the public for their support and assistance during our investigation which proved invaluable in helping us to find those responsible.

“Finally, our thoughts go out to Mr Hick’s family, who we hope can now put the stress of the trial behind them and try to return to some form of normality in their lives, knowing that those responsible for their father’s death have been brought to justice.”
