CROWDS of people flocked to parks and beaches as Somerset sizzled in the scorching summer heatwave.

From Sunday to Tuesday, temperatures soared across the county in the mini-heatwave with people rushing to take advantage of the warm temperatures.

On Tuesday, the mercury topped 30 degrees celcius, making it the hottest day of the year so far.

In Taunton, there were crowds of people lapping up the sunshine at Vivary Park, with many also taking cover in the shade in the sweltering conditions.

In Minehead, families and holidaymakers rushed to the beach and took a dip in the sea to cool off.

The good weather has also provided a boost for local businesses.

David Baker, managing director of Styles Ice Cream on Minehead seafront, said that the scorching temperatures had given them a boost as it has been a disappointing summer so far.

Mr Baker said: “We have actually been a little bit behind due to the mild summer so far but thankfully it has picked up and trade has suddenly taken off over these past few hot days.

“Luckily it has fallen when the kids are on holiday here in Somerset and there are plenty of tourists visiting, enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine.”

It is the first time this year that there has been a heatwave, but it looks like the good weather may be coming to an end.

The forecast for Thursday and Friday is for thundery showers, but it will still be a cool 25 degrees.

On Saturday, the good weather is set to return with plenty of sunshine, but then on Sunday it is set to be a muggy, overcast day, with temperatures expected to peak at 26 degrees celcius.
