VETERANS, reservists, cadets and the wider armed forces community in Somerset are set to benefit from a new pledge.

The Somerset Chamber of Commerce has pledged its support after becoming the 180th South West business to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

By signing the covenant, chief executive Dale Edwards endorsed the chamber’s support for those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces and their families.

Co-signing the pledge at the chamber’s office in Taunton was Lt Col Peter Bates OBE on behalf of Col James Coote, Commander SW.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Mr Edwards, said: “On behalf of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, I am delighted and honoured to have signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

“The chamber recognises the value of all armed services personnel past and present, including their families, who greatly contribute to the fabric of society and business.

“The whole chamber team looks forward to upholding the principles of the Covenant and working in partnership with Wessex Reserve Forces’ & Cadets’ Association, amongst others, over the coming years.”

Jon Beake, regional employment engagement director for the Wessex Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association, said: “It’s fantastic that Somerset Chamber has pledged their support to those involved with the Armed Forces by adopting their own Armed Forces Covenant. It’s been a pleasure discussing how it should be tailored to make it relevant for defence and for the chamber to provide mutual and tangible benefit.

“The support offered by individual businesses and benefits gained from ‘Partnering with Defence’ through the Armed Forces Covenant will be different for all and is a great way for businesses to highlight their support to their customers, employees and the wider community.”
