DO YOU go running or jogging? Or do you prefer a leisurely stroll down the canal paths?

The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) is urging those who do to take extra safety measures when near a large part of water as part of a new campaign.

Runners and walkers are at high risk of drowning if they are running near water, especially due to winter as they may slip or fall in.

Latest figures show around 40 per cent of all drowning or victims in the UK were people who were running or walking, and never intended to be in the water.

The society will be pushing awareness messages through social media, with the hashtag #JustOneSlip. People will be encouraged to share the charity’s posts to help save lives.

Di Steer, RLSS UK chief executive, said: “If you are running or walking next to bodies of water, whether this could be keeping fit, walking the dog, a family walk or a journey home from the pub or a night out, be aware of your surroundings and please be extra vigilant and stay well clear of bank edges.

"These are often unstable and this can create slips, trips and falls and always let someone know where you are going.

“We would ask people to support the campaign and follow our simple advice to help ensure they and their families stay safe.”

The society is urging people to be aware of their surroundings and take notice of any warning signs, to stay well clear of bank edges, walk or run with a friend and always let someone know where you are going and to take a mobile phone with you. It is also encouraging people to learn how to swim and lifesaving skills.
