AMAZON is fixing its Alexa-enabled devices after reports of the gadgets emitting a "creepy" laugh.

Some users of the virtual assistants that you can tell to play music and add items to your shopping list have been unsettled by unprompted cackling sounds coming from their devices.

One man said: "I thought it was so creepy. Asked a friend if hers does it, she confirmed Alexa has a mind of her own and switches herself on and off whenever she fancies. #notcominginourhouse."

A woman said: BECAUSE SHE’S TIRED OF YOU ALL BARKING ORDERS AT HER WITHOUT SAYING PLEASE OR THANK YOU!"

Another said: "reading other people’s creepy lil alexa encounters has me in the mood to unplug her and put her back in her box."

And last but certainly not least: "I would be more likely to buy Alexa if they kept the creepy laughing... and if when you asked her why she just went, "oh, just thinking of something someone said earlier..." would make it more human."

An Amazon spokesman explained to us: “In rare circumstances, Alexa can mistakenly hear the phrase 'Alexa, laugh'.

“We are changing that phrase to be 'Alexa, can you laugh?' which is less likely to have false positives, and we are disabling the short utterance 'Alexa, laugh'.

"We are also changing Alexa’s response from simply laughter to 'Sure, I can laugh' followed by laughter.”
