A MET Office amber warning for snow has been extended as forecasters predict snow will continue to fall across Somerset.

An amber weather warning for snow was in place until 11.55pm today (March 18) but the Met Office has extended it until 3am on Monday (March 19) as they predict snow will continue across Somerset through Sunday afternoon and into Monday morning.

A yellow warning for ice is also in place until 11.55pm today and the Met Office has issued another yellow weather warning for ice on Monday as temperatures continue to struggle to get above freezing and the setting snow looks set to harden.

Avon and Somerset Police is advising residents to 'avoid non-essential travel' and is urging motorists to stay off the roads.

The Met Office says travel delays on roads are likely and there is a risk some vehicles could be stranded.

A spokesman for The Met Office, said: "Strong east or northeasterly winds will lead to some drifting of snow, especially over hills, with significant wind chill. Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers.

"Delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely.

"There is a good chance that some rural upland communities could become cut off.

"Disruption to power supplies is possible."

The Met Office chief forecaster, said: "A band of heavier snow is moving westwards across South West England, with falls of 5-10 cm of snow within 2 to 3 hours.

"Snow will be most persistent and heavy during Sunday afternoon and evening over Dartmoor and much of South Devon, where a further 10-15 cm is expected and as much as 20-30 cm over eastern parts of Dartmoor.

"The snow will ease at times through the evening, but further spells of heavier snow are possible until the early hours of Monday.

"As less cold air follows from the south, snow may turn to rain for a time close to the south coasts of Devon and Cornwall."
