Family rescued from Brean beach
Rescue volunteers carry the two girls up the beach and away from the dangerous mudflats
Rescue volunteers carry the two girls up the beach and away from the dangerous mudflats

A MAN and his two children had to be rescued after their vehicle became trapped in the treacherous mudflats on Brean beach last Saturday.

Brean's beach warden called for help when a Toyota 4x4 and its occupants became stranded in the dangerous terrain, around 500metres from the beach.

A team of Burnham coastguards and one of the town's hovercrafts, Spirit of Lelaina, rushed to aid the stricken family at around 2.20pm - lifting them from their car and hauling them to safety.

Ian Jackson, from the West Midlands, and his two girls aged six and nine, were then transported up the beach to dry land.

A thankful Ian said: "I was very relieved to see the Burnham hovercraft and coastguards arrive so quickly.

"We didn't realise how dangerous the mudflats can be."

Mark Newman, chairman of the Burnham Area Rescue Boat, which provided the rescuing hovercraft, told the Weekly News that the tricky incident reinforced just how important the facility and the rescue teams were to the stretch of coastline.

He said: "This incident once again underscores the danger of venturing out onto the mudflats. "Fortunately, the Burnham hovercraft and coastguards were quickly on the scene and able to avoid any injuries."

A recovery operation later pulled the vehicle from the mud.
