Speedway star Brendan into British final

SOMERSET Rebel Brendan Johnson won through to the final of speedway’s British Under-21 Championship by virtue of his third-place finish in the semi-final round on the Isle of Wight.

After the 20 qualifying heats of last week’s meeting, Johnson had scored 12 points from his five rides.

That earned the 16-year-old a place in the four-rider ‘last chance’ semi-final heat, with the top two in that joining Bournemouth’s Mark Baseby and Kyle Newman in the meeting final.

Johnson made no mistake in winning the semi and he followed it up with third place in the final itself.

Baseby won the meeting ahead of Newman, with Ben Hopwood finishing behind Johnson in fourth.

Johnson will take his place alongside 15 of the best young riders in Britain in the championship final on Friday.

It is being staged at the Arena Essex Raceway – the home of Elite League side Lakeside Hammers.

There was further joy for Johnson after it was announced he had been seeded directly through to the semi-final rounds of the European Under-19 Speedway Championships.

His semi-final will be staged in Hungary early next month.

The teenager shares the ‘double up’ reserve berth at Somerset with Jay Herne and combines that with riding for the Isle of Wight in the National League.
