Rebels boss proud of TV debut

THE Somerset Rebels can look back on a highly successful debut showing on Sky Sports following the live broadcast of their Premier League match against King’s Lynn on Tuesday.

In front of not only the live cameras but also one of the biggest crowds seen at the Oak Tree Arena since the club was formed in 2000, it was a meeting that contained just about everything – tension, drama, excellent racing and a last-heat decider that even Sky TV could not have scripted.

Rebels general manager David Croucher could not contain his delight at the way the night went.

“I was astonished at the response to our promotion of the meeting and was obviously very pleased to see such a huge crowd packed into the Oak Tree Arena,” he said.

“We are, as a club, over the moon with the praise that has been heaped upon us for the not only the quality of the speedway action but also for the presentation of the Oak Tree Arena and, as importantly, the result itself as King’s Lynn were out for blood right from the off and were tough opponents, especially as we were missing Simon Walker from our side due to injury.

“I was delighted for our team manager, Ronnie Russell, and cannot praise him enough for what I consider to be a very well thought out bit of team managing.

"Even the Sky boys said the atmosphere in the outside broadcast unit was electric towards the end of the meeting – they couldn’t have wished for a better meeting finale.

“I feel sure we have been a superb advert for Premier League speedway and the Oak Tree Arena will gain by way of new supporters from those who came along for the first time last Tuesday.

“It has been a privilege to showcase the Premier League here at Somerset and we cannot thank Sky Sports enough for having given us the opportunity to show the TV viewing public just what a great venue the Oak Tree Arena is.”
