GEORGE Thomas produced a stunning round of golf to win the Seniors Monthly Medal at Brean.

He took just 84 strokes but, after his handicap of 21 was deducted, his nett 63 was head and shoulders above the rest. In the final reckoning, he commanded a seven-shot victory over Pete Douglas who was second and was 10 clear of third placed Mike Allen.

Thomas now finds his handicap reduced by three shots to 18 as a result of his success.

Seniors Captain Tony Roper has won both the Seniors Summer Knockouts. Firstly, he joined forces with Roger Blackwell to defeat Ken Ponter and John Sherwood in the Final of the Greensomes Trophy before beating David Jones in the Final of the Singles to collect the President’s Salver for 2012.

The Pairs Aggregate Stableford competition didn’t produce the low scoring of the previous weekend as the weather turned cold and the stiff breeze made points hard to come by.

Martyn Cahill continued his impressive run of form to hand in the best individual card of the day showing 36 points and, when this was added to his partner, Paul McLanaghan, they totalled 62 points.

Unfortunately, this was not quite good enough to repeat the successes of the previous weekend for the pair and they were awarded second place on countback. The winning pair of Roy Fletcher and Jerry Brueford beat them by two shots as they were one of the rare pairs where both players managed to top the 30-point barrier. Fletcher contributed exactly 30 while Brueford weighed in with four more in their winning total of 64.

Third and fourth place pairs also totalled 62 points and a complex countback was needed to separate them all. Eamonn Wynne and Tony Richards were eventually declared in third ahead of Neil Barker and Ron Vine in fourth.

Brean’s professionals produced some solid if not spectacular performances in the latest G&S PGA Medal at The Kendleshire in Bristol last Wednesday.

Andrew March ended in a tie for eighth after his 75 while Roy Baker was just two shots back, sharing 11th spot. For the second event running, David Haines had to retire as his troublesome back injury meant he could only complete 14 holes of his round.
