Burnham 17, Wells 21

A STRETCHED Burnham squad suffered a narrow defeat to Wells at the weekend as injuries and absentees halt the team's progress.

Burnham started well with early pressure resulting in a well worked try in the corner by Matt Love with Tim Piper converting it put the home side into a 7-0 lead.

Wells's young moblie side were not allowed to settle and through a series of rolling mauls Burnham were awarded a penalty which saw Piper duly step up to convert and push them into a 10-0 lead.

But this was the end of Burnham's scoring for the first half as Wells closed the gap to 10-8 at half-time.

In the second half, Wells sensed a bit of patience and composure could get them the breaks and a converted try and penalty helped the visitors take a 10-18 lead.

Burnham responded and scored through a pushover try that Piper converted to separate the teams by just one point.

But Wells scored two further penalties without reply to seal the win.

Burnham are again at home on Saturday with a rearranged fixture against Chosen Hill.

*THE second team had no game at the weekend and will have to wait until March 23 for their next outing when they take on Wyvern.
