CAPTAIN Brian Read posted the best score of the day in the May Medal played on Saturday at Brean Golf Club. He secured the prize for Division Two with his nett 67 beating Matt Haskins by two shots.

Eamonn Wynne was the winner of the top Division with a splendid nett 68 as he enjoyed a four shot winning margin over Muraay Parsons. Scoring was a bit higher in the Third Division and no one played to their handicap in the tough conditions. Gordon Wheelaghan with his nett 73 was the victor two clear of Nigel Hodges on 75.

The Ladies played for the Presidents Putter alongside their Medal. Suzanne Hatfield added another trophy to her ever growing list of awards as she led the way from Annie Williams in second and Ladies Captain Sheila Rouse took third spot.

Former captain Dave Bradley bounced back to winning ways with the stand out round of the day in the Monthly Stableford. He racked up 45 points during his round and this was six more than anyone else in the field could manage all day.

Two players did get 39 points but unfortunately for them they both were in Division Two alongside Bradley so Tony Higgins had to settle for second spot whilst Dave Lockwood ended up third.

A small entry in Division One was due to the Avalon League also taking place so Chris Fairchild's 37 points was good enough for him to take top spot ahead of Mark Hatfield on 35. Division Three was also won with 37 points as Alan Marshall relegated Nigel Hodges to his second runners up spot of the weekend.

The Division Two Avalon League side got back to winning ways at home with a hard fought victory over their local rivals Burnham and Berrow. With Burnham getting promoted last season to join Brean in Division Two it sets up intriguing home and away clashes during the season. Brean took the honours in the first of them as they defeated a strong visiting side 3-2 with some excellent golf being played.

The Seniors Stableford was comprehensively won by Tony Tissington on Tuesday. He racked up 46 points to win at a canter by nine from Wally Pape, taking a whopping three shots off of his 21 handicap.

Seniors Chairman Wally Pape was runner up on 37 and Alan Marshall edged out Dai Wood on countback for third after they both had 36 points. Tony Roper battled the strong breeze to collect the Wally Pape Bogey on Thursday morning. Whilst the majority of the field struggled in the conditions Roper beat the course by 3 as the players play matchplay against the course. He ended one hole ahead of Barrie Tucker and third place went to Roger Phillips who ended on level.

David Haines fared the best of the Brean professionals in the 36 hole Gloucester and Somerset PGA Championship.

He ended the day in tie for fourth spot alongside Paul Barrington with a two round total of 142. He followed his morning round of 74 with a best of the afternoon two under par 68 to finish at two over par for the 36 hole event.

Roy Baker and Andrew March also took part but both struggled and ended the day at the wrong end of the scoreboard.

The event also marked the end of the winter season of weekly medals that the trio have played in. March finished the highest of the Brean Pro's in the final Total Triumph Order of Merit in sixth spot one place above Haines in seventh. Roy Baker in his first season as a Pro ended up in 24th spot.

March and Haines now both qualify for the next season's opening event the Wormald and Partners G&S PGA Matchplay Championship at Chipping Sodbury in September.
