Leaf fires Burnham to emphatic win
10:00am Wednesday 21st August 2013 in Sport
Errea County First Division
Burnham United 7, Saltford 0
STEVE Leaf scored a brilliant hat-trick as Burnham United thrashed Saltford on Saturday.
The wide-man netted twice in the first-half, including a fine individual effort, before completing his hat-trick in the dying minutes.
United started well and built on their improved midweek performance.
Steve Leaf and Warren Whitfield were dangerous throughout and the midfield pairing of Craig Hirons and Mike Stevens controlled possession for United, who looked very comfortable.
Leaf opened the scoring with a brilliant solo effort; dribbling almost 50 yards before slotting home.
Burnham were rarely threatened defensively as the solid pairing of Stuart Walford and James Cannard kept the visitors at bay.
Walford added a second just before the break and the impressive Leaf made it three minutes later as Burnham put the game to bed.
The one-sided theme continued after the break, with Craig Hirons curling home two free-kicks from the edge of the box to make it 5-0.
Whitfield rounded off a solid individual performance with a sixth as he drove a low shot into the bottom corner, and it was left to Leaf to complete the scoring and secure the match ball in the dying minutes with Burnham’s seventh.
Manager Luke Hussey was pleased with the result and the improvement shown by his players. He said: “This was an improved performance on last week but it’s important we find some consistency.”
l Burnham make the trip to Frome Collegians on Saturday.
l Burnham Res, who lost 1-0 at Churchill Club in Division 2 W at the weekend, entertain Wells City Res on Saturday (KO 3pm).
