Tony Roper and Debbie Windmill take Past Captain's trophies
11:47am Monday 9th September 2013 in Sport
CLUB Chairman and Seniors Past Captain Tony Roper and Ladies Past Captain Debbie Windmill won their respective sections of Brean's Annual Past Captains Day.
Over 20 of the previous post holders at Brean returned to enjoy a round of golf, a meal and to meet up with some old friends. Roper, with a new driver and putter in his bag, had the best score of the day by some margin with a card showing a 42 point total. This was 4 better than Roger Vaughan and Bob Masterman in the Men's section of the event.
Debbie Windmill produced a solid round as she beat her handicap by one with 37 points to take victory in the Ladies comp. This was two better than her nearest challenger in Annie Williams with Jenny Vaughan taking third one point further back.
Ian 'Grizz' Adams reached the turn in Sunday's Super Series Stableford in a stunning level par gross which when his handicap allowance was deducted gave him a massive 27 points. Not surprisingly he couldn't maintain that same form on the homeward nine but he still managed to add another 14 points to give him a total of 41. This proved to be good enough to take the win by a single point from John Cullinan. Cullinan maybe didn't feel at his best after the previous nights indulgences but his golf was superb on his way to a 40 point haul. Third place was decided after a countback on 39 with Barrie Tucker shading it ahead of Murray Parsons.
Vince Ford was the winner of the 'Avalon Open' at Brean on Saturday with a card of 42 points. This won by one but it could of been much more comfortable for him as he failed to score on no less than 4 holes during his round. Second place went to Andy Chapple on 41 ahead of a trio on 40. Roger Vaughan was the best of the 40's and took 3rd spot from Stewart Garrett with Neil Barker ending up in 5th position. All of the leading 5 players also saw their handicaps reduced following their good play.
Two George's led the scorecharts in the September Seniors Monthly Stableford both with 40 point totals. George Thomas was declared the victor after a countback over the back nine holes ahead of George Stratford. Stratford was left to rue a disaster on the closing hole when he failed to score which ultimately cost him top spot. Third place went to John Sherwood on 37. Two days later Dave Benjafield halted his poor run of form with a superb nett 65 in the second round of the Seniors Eclectic Medal. The score was good enough to win by one shot and reduce what has been a rising handicap of late back down to 15. Bob Hurrell was second on 66 and he also enjoyed a handicap cut as a result of his recent steady results. Third place was taken by Pete Douglas on nett 69.
The club mixed team suffered a narrow defeat in their annual match against Worlebury. This year's game for the Breanbury Trophy was hosted by Worlebury and they won the closely contested match by 4 games to 3. Next year it will be Brean's turn to host the match so they will looking to win back the Cup.
