Phil Hodgson wins D&C Open again
10:00am Thursday 19th September 2013 in Sport
PHIL Hodgson won the prestigious D&C Open for the second time in three years as he triumphed on Saturday at Brean.
He returned a superb nett 66 which was also matched by Captain Elect Paul Jones, but Hodgson took the silverware by virtue of his better back nine score.
One consolation for Jones was that he did move his handicap back into single figures again with his effort.
Another count-back was needed for third place with Nigel Ellis having the best of the pair of 67's that were posted as he relegated Roger Phillips to 4th spot.
Steve Bateman handed in the lowest gross score of the day with a 73 to take that prize.
MARK and Suzanne Hatfield were the winners of the Open Mixed Greensomes on Sunday with a 36 point total. This gave them victory by a single point over two pairs who ended up on 35pts. Ken and Sheila Rouse were the better of that duo as they were declared runners up ahead of Steve and Gail Mason.
BREAN’S Bar Manager Les Byrne competed in the 25th staging of the Bristol Half Marathon to raise money for the Captains Charity of 2013, Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
Following a summer of training he managed to beat his time of the previous year by just under 10 minutes, despite carrying an Achilles injury he picked up recently on a training run.
He completed the course in 2hrs 21mins and 20secs and in the process raised a healthy sum for the Charity.
All the members and staff at Brean wish to congratulate him on his efforts.
THE ANNUAL Seniors Fun Day was played in a different format this year as the competitors were faced with a cross country course.
The layout was designed by Tony Roper and his 10-hole creation was well received by the members.
The highlight of the day was Club Treasurer's Dave Barthram's hole-in-one playing from the 12th tee to the 11th green (123 yds.).
Barthram's ace helped to be part of the winning team along with Tony Grimes and Bob Masterman with a nett of 34.2 over the 10 holes.
The trio of Chris Stephens, Barrie Yearsley and Bob Hurrell were second with net 35.5 with course designer Tony Roper, Dave Benjafield and Annie Williams taking third with net 36.7.
In addition to the team prizes there were also some 'local' spot prizes of nearest to the special flags placed around the course.
These prizes were mostly claimed by Roy Snell who found the short range targets to lie right on his driving distance.
Afterwards the old 18th par 3 hole was re-incarnated for a one off nearest the pin competition. This hole has been greatly missed in the revised layouts and the prize was claimed by Ken Rouse who finished 2" inside Roper's opening pitch.
All in all a good day was had by everyone with the added bonus that they all stayed dry.
