Kevin Davies overcomes disaster to take trophy
1:00pm Monday 21st October 2013 in Sport
KEVIN Davies overcame a disaster at Brean's treacherous seventh hole to bounce back and win the Tom Childs Memorial Flag Trophy on Sunday.
He racked up a 12 on what is quite possibly the toughest hole in Somerset but recovered well to post a nett 68 which gave him two extra shots back down the first in the Flag competition.
After hitting these shots he ended up just off the back of the green and further than anyone else could manage. Club Chairman Tony Roper was the only other player to break par and his single extra shot down the first fairway gained him second place on his own.
No less than four players tied for third as they ended up in the 18th hole although one of them Steve Jones had miscalculated his score and thought he had another shot to play only to be corrected later.
Murray Parsons, Gordy Wheelaghan and Chris Payne joined Jones in the tie for third spot.
Ladies Captain Shelia Rouse continued her successful year in office as she won the Ladies competition ahead of Suzanne Hatfield.
DAVE Lockwood won a three-way countback to win the Bogey Trophy at Brean on Saturday.
He finished with a plus 4 score in the match play format against the course as did Roy Fletcher and Tony Richards. Lockwood thought he had blown his chances as he missed a short par putt on the 18th but luckily he still had the superior back nine score over his two rivals who filled the second and third spots respectively.
All three players had their handicaps reduced though following their good scores.
Gordy Wheelaghan was 4th on his own with his card of plus 3.
COLIN Roberts had the best score of the Seniors Eclectic round on a misty Tuesday morning at Brean. Play was suspended for about 30 minutes at the start of the day to allow the fog to clear and Roberts produced a winning nett 71 as the sun began to shine.
Second place went to John Sherwood on count back ahead of Pete Douglas after they both scored nett 73's.
Two days later Pete Douglas made light work of the two clubs and a putter restriction as he won the Seniors Ward Tankard with a 37 point stableford score.
With course management tested to the max with the minimal club allowance he navigated his way around the Brean course totaling 2 more points than any of his 20 other rivals.
Second place on 35 points was Tony Roper with John Sherwood again featuring in the prizes as he was one point further behind in taking third spot.
