AS December dawned on Sunday morning a large field congregated for the popular Lukee Christmas Cup.

Over 50 players took to the course for the shotgun start where everyone wins a prize and the leading score in this year's competition came from Steve Bateman.

He carded a superb 42 points to win the overall Trophy and his Division by 2 points. Murray Parsons was the next best score on the day but had to settle for the runners up spot to Bateman after his 40 point score.

The Division Two top man was Ron Vine with 39 points just ahead of Pete Dunn on 38. The victor of the Third Division probably raised the loudest cheer at the presentations as 10 year old Ben Haines won with 36 points.

He held a 3 point winning margin over Jim McLauchlan who had 33. The Ladies event was won by Ladies Captain Sheila Rouse ahead of her Captain Elect Annie Williams.

THE Sam Smalldon Memorial Trophy is also heading Steve Bateman's way this year after a spectacular 48 point score in the Monthly Stableford the previous Sunday.

Despite being one of the lowest handicapped players in the club the former Club Champion carded 7 birdies and no bogies in his round which saw temporary greens in use for the first 6 holes.

Four of the birdies came in that opening stretch but he also added 3 more at the 7th, 12th and 14th in his seven under par round. Runner up to him in Division One was Steve Jones on 40 points.

Division Two winner was Dave Bradley with an impressive 42 points which on a normal day would have been in with a good shout of the silverware. Phil Aspinall was the second placed finisher to Bradley with one point less.

Scoring wasn't quite as good in the Third flight as Mo Sanders took the win with a score one point shy of 40. Youngster Ben Haines had a storming back nine to take second spot with 33. Suzanne Hatfield won the Ladies event from Gail Mason.

MURRAY Parsons and Russell Shaw took victory on a cold but dry morning at Brean as they mastered the three formats, Scramble, Greensomes and Foursomes, which make up the Ransome competition. A sub par front nine score by the pair paved their way to success as they won by just under a shot from Club Champion Dan Broom and Pete Barton. Broom and Barton made light of their last minute decision to play as they relegated Club Captain Brian Read and his Captain Elect Paul Jones into 3rd.

DAVE Benjafield and John Sherwood won the latest round of the Seniors Winter League event. This week's format was also a Ransome where the pairs play the three different formats. A couple of pairs even tried to inadvertently introduce another format but they got disqualified for their troubles. Benjafield and Sherwood scored a nett 66.3 giving them a 0.7 winning margin over Seniors Chairman Wally Pape and Geoff Seaman. In third place was Dai Wood and Chris Stephens on 69.
