SFA Senior Cup

Berrow 2, Burnham United 4

BURNHAM United assistant manager Matt Counsell said he was 'extremely proud' of his young players after they beat local rivals Berrow 4-2 to pull off a major cup upset.

Burnham raced into a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Nathan Bishop and Russell Holley - but Berrow fought their way back into the game with two quick-fire goals from Ross McErlain to level the tie up.

With 15 minutes remaining, Holley popped up in the area to add his second and Burnham's third, before Bishop rounded things off with a curling finish to fire Burnham into the next round.

Counsell, who together with manager Luke Hussey was forced into a handful of changes before the game, paid tribute to the efforts of his players. He said: "We are extremely proud of what the players have achieved today they were challenged to do something special and they did.

“After last week's defeat at Castle Cary and the injuries we picked up it going in to a game against a proven talented County Premier side in Berrow, let alone a local derby, it was going to be tough even before we became the walking wounded.

“Luke has given youth a chance since he took over and today what these young inexperienced players have done in a massive game proves what he has put in place is working - and given time the team will develop further."The first real chance of the game fell to Berrow when Dave Keirle found space in box, before shooting wide.

Burnham had failed to mount a real threat to the Berrow defence, but took the lead on 25 minutes when 17-year-old Bishop chested the ball over the line from a Mike Burnell header.

Berrow nearly hit back straight away when Ellis Harper got in behind the Burnham defence, but his effort was expertly saved by Will Lamb before the follow up was cleared off the line by Cleave. With 10 minutes of the first half remaining, Burnham doubled their lead when Russell Holley rose highest in the box to head from Elliot Lamb's free-kick.

Berrow came out sharper after the interval and pulled a goal back through Ross McErlain as he headed home a quick free-kick and Burnham had been caught napping.

McErlain then drew his side level with brilliantly executed chip from the edge of the penalty area to fire Berrow right back into the contest.

With 75 minutes on the clock, Burnham regained the lead when Anthony Cleaves cross-come-shot was guided home by Holley.

And the First Division side were in dreamland minutes later when Bishop cut in from the left to curl the ball into the bottom corner. In the final stages, Burnham had chances to extend their lead with Selway, Cleave, Stevens all going close and Leaf hitting the post.

But it wasn't to matter as Burnham celebrated a famous win over their local rivals.
