DAVID and Stephen Haines moved into the semi-finals of The West of England Winter Foursomes at Burnham & Berrow Golf Club last Sunday with a comfortable 5&4 win over the Surry-based pairing of Yoginara Patel and Martin Aylett.

PGA Professional David Haines, who is based at Brean Golf Club but learned to play at Burnham & Berrow with his younger brother, Stephen, put their win down to their local knowledge and experience of playing in the tough blustery conditions that prevailed last weekend.

David said: “We had a good start winning three of the first five holes, which made it even more difficult for our opponents, who struggled to come to terms with the strong winds which they very rarely experience playing on parkland courses in Surrey.”

They face Symon Cliford and Stephen Thomas in the semi-final on February 9.

Andy Fisher won Division 1 in the Saturday Stableford with 37 points, just beating Robin Griffiths by virtue of a better back nine.

Division 2 was won by Larry Summers with 35.

Highlight of the day went to Rob Sutton who made a two at the first, holing out from over 150 yards.

The early starters benefitted from the best of the conditions as the wind that was punctuated with blustery showers picked up as the day went on.

At one point, the course became unplayable when a storm came through causing trolleys and bags to be blown over, balls to be blown off tees and greens, and competitors struggling to stand up, let alone swing a golf club.

The Mid-Week Stableford was won by James Penny with 40 points and Jean Booth completed a second win in as many weeks with a back nine victory over Carole Stratford in the ladies medal last Tuesday with a net 78.
