Somerset Junior Cup semi-final

Wells City Reserves 2, Burnham United 0

BURNHAM United’s cup run came to an abrupt end on Saturday as they were beaten 2-0 by Wells City Reserves.

In the opening passage of play Wells forced a succession of corners which ended with their captain prodding home form six yards, with the United defence left appealing for offside.

Wells then set to dominate for the next half hour as Burnham were over run - and despite trying to play out from the back and retain possession they were under severe pressure.

United started to get a foothold in the game as wingers Cleave and Bishop began to get some ball and beat full backs with regularity.

Changes were made at half time to counter the Wells’ midfield dominance as Bishop moved into the central area with Burnell coming on at right wing.

Wells set about with the same methodical game plan and Holley and Plume had to be at their very best as they repelled attacks in a real physical contest.

Will Lamb made some unbelievable saves to keep the score close and Plume was lucky to stay on the pitch after receiving a yellow for pulling down a striker who was through on goal.

From the resulting free-kick, the Wells captain capped a fine performance with a curling effort into the top corner. United tried in vain to throw bodies forward in the final ten minutes but never threatened the home keeper.

Burnham United manager Luke Hussey was disappointed with the result, but felt the better side had won the game.

He said: “No complaints about the result, the best team won on the day - we’ve beaten four Premier Division sides to get this far and Wells were by far better than any of them, we wish them luck in the final.

“We are all obviously disappointed because we didn’t feel we gave a good account of ourselves, but it’s another learning step for us as we continue to build our squad and experience.

“We’ve still got exactly half of our league games to play and with even more youngsters coming through the ranks we’ve got plenty to look forward to as the games start to come thick and fast.”
