Berrow 3, Yatton Athletic 2

BERROW recorded their first win in five games as they held on to beat Yatton Athletic 3-2 on Saturday.

Luke McErlain, Harry Penfold and Luke Morgan netted for Berrow, who climb to eighth.

The home side started well, with Ash Catlow and Luke McErlain dominating the midfield and Jeff Read’s forward runs and pressing causing panic in the away defence.

Dave Keirle was twice denied by the keeper and Steve Leaf was unlucky after good build up work from Shaun Lismore and Catlow.

Yatton were dangerous up front, and twice within a couple of minutes they nearly snatched the lead slack saving well from the first effort and the second drifting just wide.

Scott Lismore was having a lot of joy down the left, and when he was brought down 30 yards from goal, Luke McErlain stepped up to fire a shot that the ‘keeper failed to deal with to give Berrow a deserved lead.

Berrow’s midfield was on top form, with Read driving forward at every opportunity.

Despite chances for Keirle and Leaf, Berrow had to be content with a one-goal lead at the break.

Yatton came out far more determined in the second half and were trying hard to disrupt Berrow’s passing - but as the half wore on it was the home side who regained control and took a two goal lead when Luke McErlain’s deep corner was headed back across goal by brother Kyle, to his centre back partner Harry Penfold, who took a touch and fired home.

Yatton pulled a goal back almost immediately with a thumping header from a corner.

Luke Morgan replaced the hard working Shaun Lismore and with his first involvement he raced onto Keirle’s flick and confidently beat the keeper.

Jack Shepherd and Tom Yates replaced Steve Osgood and Keirle, with Yates going close with a header from his first touch.

Luke McErlain’s clever free kick allowed Leaf to break into the box but his finish went just over.

Yatton then pulled another goal back with five minutes remaining, forcing berrow to withstand a nervous finish - but they held out, with Slack making a wonder save and Kyle McErlain and Penfold dealing superbly with the numerous balls played into the box.
