Somerset Cricket League Division Two
Burnham 133-8 lost to Barrington 230-4 by 97 runs
AFTER two weeks of cancelled fixtures, Burnham finally got their season underway with a 97-run defeat at the hands of Barrington on Saturday.
Needing 231 for victory, Burnham were never really up with the rate and crawled to 133-8 from their 45 overs – Pete Harris (28) and Jim Bloodworth (18) top scored for Burnham who took ten points from the game.
Earlier, Brian Brogden took 3-48 as Barrington posted an imposing first innings total – one that would prove to be a stretch too far for Burnham.
T Towill got the Barrington innings off to a flyer with a quick-fire 62 at the top of the order.
S Redwood fell for 16 to the bowling of Rob Driver (1-48), but G French joined Towill to continue their dominance.
French fell to Brogden for a well made 33 - and Brogden soon removed Hodgkinson for single figures as Burnham fought their way back into the game.
Towill was next to go, not long after bringing up his half century, but B Tyekiff (39no) and S Gerring (69no) took over the reins and began to find the boundary at regular intervals.
The pair played with aggression and freedom to carry Barrington to 230-4 at the end of the 45 overs.
In reply, Burnham lost Brad House early in the innings for just 7 and Driver wasn’t far behind as he departed for 8.
Jim Bloodworth (18) and Pete Harris (28) briefly set about rebuilding, but when the former fell to D Brain (4-31), the Burnham chase was all but over.
Martin (0), Tipler (12), Smith (11) and Aston (11) all fell in quick succession as the run rate slowed further.
Mike Green (13no) remained unbeaten at the close, but Burnham were well short of their target.
Burnham host Wells next Saturday – 2pm start.
