BRIDGWATER College students recently spent a day at the Mendip Shooting Ground as part of the Team BC Active sports programme.

The students received an indepth health and safety talk from their instructor on gun control, protective wear and safety measures.

They also received tuition on basic technique, and how to correct errors and gradually improve, and they received free membership of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, as well a ‘Safe Shot’ qualification that will enable them to continue shooting.

These sessions were funded by Sportivate to try to engage more students in a variety of sports.

Clay pigeon shooting tends to engage a large number of participants, particularly among students of Agriculture, although a number from Health and Social Care also took part.

Adam Collett, from Minehead, said: “The tuition was excellent.

The instructors spent time with each person explaining how to get the gun fitting them correctly.

“Everyone enjoyed the day and definitely wanted to come along again.”

Carly Martin, the college’s Sports Maker, said: “We’re looking to create links with Mendip Shooting Ground to give participants the opportunity to shoot on a regular basis or start their own Bridgwater College Shooting Club.”

Clay pigeon shooting sessions are run every Wednesday afternoon at 12pm for the Bridgwater Centre and 1.15pm for the Cannington Centre.

All students are welcome to participate. For more information contact Carly Martin on 01278- 441322 or email martinc@bridgwater.ac.uk
