RUSSELL Shaw produced the best round of the day in the 2014 Captains Day on Saturday to take the coveted Captains Cup.

His gross 73 was the best of the morning, as was his nett 63 which bagged him the silverware.

Club captain Paul Jones was blessed with good weather for the majority of the day following an early rain shower and the members turned out in their droves to support his day.

Martyn Cahill took top spot in Division Two with his nett 64, which came as a result of some extensive practice leading up to the event. He can feel unlucky not to have taken the Cup himself but Shaw's excellence denied him. Division Three was secured by another up and coming player in Simon Baunton with his nett 66.

Jenny Vaughan was the Ladies winner ahead of Debbie Windmill.

After a lunchtime barbeque it was back out on the course for the popular Cross Country Scramble.

A nine hole layout was devised by newly recruited shop assistant Jordan Jones and each player could only select two clubs and a putter to tackle it.

Dennis May is becoming a bit of a Cross Country Scramble expert as he featured in the prizes for the second year running and he took top spot alongside Nigel Ellis and David Hunter with a stunning nett 25, seven under the card.

The betterball format was deployed once again this year and the leading pair were Pat Mullholland and Jim McLauchlan with a superb 47 point score to win the Bill Martin Trophy.

The final silverware of the day went to Chris Stephens and Mendip Spring's Mike Pollard who scored 42 and took home the Nicoll Trophy for the best pair aged between 65-69.
