HIGHBRIDGE Town chairman Matt Pitt says his side will not be resting on their laurels when they begin life in the Somerset County League – and expects to be challenging for a second successive promotion.

Town were crowned champions of the Taunton & District League in May and their application to the County League was approved in June.

Town kicked off the new season in winning style on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Taunton-based Staplegrove- and Pitt, who doubles up as manager and chairman, says the players are in confident mood ahead of the new campaign.

He said: “We have been back in training since mid-June, we’ve been going for a few weeks.

We’ve had a fresh influx of talented youngsters and added a few senior players with County league experience, so we’re confident heading into the season.

“I’d be disappointed if we weren’t challenging at the top again this season, I don’t think it’s that big a step up and we’ve all spoken about the season aims and agreed that a promotion challenge is realistic.

“We played really well against Staplegrove on Saturday, considering they play in the Somerset First Division, so we’ve proved already that we’re good enough.”
