A KING ALFRED’S boxer will be going head to head with some tough opposition in October after being selected for the Western Counties Boxing Team.
Shaunessy Abraham, from Highbridge, will be boxing a select team from the Channel Isles on October 3 in Guernsey.
The 17-year-old has been training four nights a week throughout the summer with his coach, Roger Cross, and is a prime example of what King Alfred’s Boxing Club is trying to promote to youthful members of the community.
Roger said: “Shaunessy is a good lad and trains hard, I am very confident he can go the distance.
“I’ve also been training with two other boys for six months and they will soon be carded. Once they’re carded, they seem to strive more towards their training and it gives them that psychological advantage.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Peter Penfold for his generous donation; we have now got three new bags and are looking to get new gloves.
“The club is concerned about all the new houses that are bringing in more youths to the area, so we have come up with this boxing club programme.”
The King Alfred’s Boxing Club runs training sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm-8pm and is located behind the Highbridge Asda store, Springfield Road.
Sessions cost £2 and all ages are welcome. For more information call Roger on 01278-284753.
