Sedgemoor Division 2

Taunton Civil Service 5, Burnham-on-Sea 0

THIS match was a lot closer than the scoreline suggests but Burnham came up against a well organised, young, pacy team that eventually wore away their resolve.

Had they taken some of their really good first-half chances it could have been a different story.

June England, Ellie Bishop and Amy Edmundson all went close as the match swung from end to end with both goalkeepers making important saves.

While they were not awarded one penalty corner, Burnham created numerous chances from open play but just could not convert them.

Chelsea Fisher showed great courage with some terrific blocks at Burnham’s defensive corners and, with Emma Ballard staying strong and calm, Burnham repelled CS until just before half-time.

Unfortunately, the second half was ruined by some inexplicable umpiring which eventually affected the visitors more, including a harsh yellow card for Sarah Johnson.

This had an impact on the team’s shape and disrupted their rhythm so they just could not keep the ball.

As a result, CS grew in confidence while Burnham lost theirs.

They gradually tired from constantly defending so conceding more goals always looked inevitable.

However, they kept battling until the end and will look to bounce back next Saturday with a home match against winless Winscombe.

Player of the match: Emma Ballard.
