ANDY Thomas and Barry Fisher joined forces to win the Pairs Aggregate Stableford at Brean Golf Club after late pull-outs saw them paired together.

Thomas was the bigger scorer of the duo with 40 points but Fisher weighed in with a more than respectable 37-point haul.

They ended up five clear of two pairs on 72 and a countback was needed to decide the runners-up.

Simon Baunton produced another superb round in what has been an excellent year for him as he notched 41 points with his partner Tom Marshfield contributing the other 31 to the total.

Third spot after losing out on the back nine scores went to captain-elect Stuart Wills and Martyn Cahill with 38 and 34, respectively.

Two other players matched Baunton’s best of the day 41- point cards but neither of Mo Sanders or Mike Porter’s partners had days to remember meaning they didn’t feature in the prizes.

The new Winter League campaign got underway on the morning after the clocks went back and the ever improving Mark Hatfield produced a stunning level par round of 70 to win by some distance.

The practice he has put in over the last week paid off as his card showed three birdies and three bogies on his way to 44 stableford points.

Second, third and fourth spots all had 38 points with John Mardon taking second ahead of Trevor Pitt and Mel Brown.

The winner was Barrie Tucker who managed an overall nett 52 helped greatly by his nett 62 in the fourth round last week.

Runner-up on nett 53 was Mike Drayton, who actually managed to fend off the tail end of Hurricane Gonzalo in the final round on Tuesday to improve his score.

Third place went to Dai Wood on nett 54 but he was unable to compete in the final round as a bout of 'manflu' laid him low.

Tied 4th on 56 were Barry Fisher and Ken Ponter whilst Roger Phillips rounded out the top six on 58.

Brean PGA Pro Andrew March regained top spot in the Total Triumph Gloucester and Somerset PGA Medal last week when his fourth placed finish moved back ahead of Giuseppe Licata.

His round of 72 was two shots behind the leading duo and this week he travels to Bristol & Clifton Golf club to defend his lead.

l PGA Board member David Haines recorded his first event win since becoming the Head Professional at Burnham and Berrow earlier this year.

He posted a one under par score of 70, helped by some monster putts, to claim a share of top spot in the G&S PGA Medal at The Kendleshire with Ed Goodwin from Cirencester.

His win saw him move up to third spot in the Total Triumph Order of Merit ready for his annual challenge for the title.
