Somerset County Division Two West
Burnham United Reserves 0, Kewstoke Lions 7
BURNHAM United Reserves slumped to a humbling 7-0 home defeat at the hands of highflying Kewstoke Lions on Saturday.
The defeat is Burnham’s eighth of the season and leaves them second from bottom in the division with just three points from nine games.
Paul Marquiss scored a hat-trick for the visitors as they climbed to second place, while Aaron Bray, Leon Brueford, Nicky Daniels and Ben Popperwell were also on target for Lions.
Burnham started very well and nearly took an early lead with a strong shot from Harry Wedgewood-Potts, but Kewstoke’s keeper managed to palm it wide.
Up to the 20-minute mark, Burnham were competing all over the park, but Kewstoke opened their account with a well-timed run and pass which split the Burnham defence.
Kewstoke are a strong team, and Burnham started giving the ball away far too cheaply with their opponents taking full advantage, scoring four more goals before halftime.
In the second half Burnham were much better and battled away tirelessly against a team full of confidence, but all to no avail.
The Reserves take a break from league action this weekend when they host Clevedon United Reserves in the Division Two Cup.
Clevedon have fared far better than Burnham this season, taking 12 points from ten games, but Burnham will see this as an opportunity to kickstart their season.
