Somerset County League Division 1 W

Middlezoy Rovers 3, Burnham United 0

THREE goals in the second-half condemned Burnham United to their seventh league defeat of the season as they went down 3-0 at new league leaders Middlezoy Rovers on Saturday.

Craig Wright’s second-half hattrick ensured Middlezoy will start the New Year in top spot – but, to their credit, a young Burnham side gave a good account of themselves and edged possession in the first half, but chances were at a premium.

Wright had the best chance for the home side but Jamie Temlett’s through ball was lofted narrowly over the crossbar.

After the break, the home side started to cause problems for the visiting defence and Wright broke the deadlock on 51 minutes, prodding home at the second time of asking, following a goalkeeping error.

Aaron Whaites made the second on the hour, unselfishly squaring to Wright when through on the Burnham goal for a tap-in.

Wright’s free-kick then crashed against the post and his close-range header was well saved moments later after good work from Whaites.

The Middlezoy talisman did wrap up his hat-trick with ten minutes to play, finishing well through the defender’s legs and taking his impressive tally to 23 goals from 20 games this season.
