Chew Valley 7, Burnham 17

BURNHAM dragged themselves further away from the relegation mire with a superb victory over promotion-chasing Chew Valley on Saturday.

Tries from Jordan Wikiteria and Richard Muskett, as well as seven points from Tim Piper's boot, sealed a vital win for the visitors.

This was a pulsating, exhilarating game in which Burnham produced their absolute best in every single aspect of the game, with each and every player playing their part.

Chew Valley kicked and initially showed why they were in the top four of the league - and with a much heavier pack than Burnham, they were able to provide their backs with quality ball.

After six minutes, Chew’s fly-half spotted an opportunity to run at the Burnham defence and cut through to score close to the posts.

From then on, try as they might Chew could not break down the Burnham line and eventually, as Burnham gained more and more confidence they came back with a vengeance.

Firstly by frustrating their opponents and secondly by getting good lineout possession.

This was followed by three successful phases before Jordan Wikiteria showed his strength and agility to stretch out his arm and score a try, converted by Piper.

Burnham continued to pressurise Chew, who eventually transgressed, giving Tim Piper the chance to extend the lead.

Minutes after the restart Burnham's determined rolling maul created a hole on the blind side for Richard Muskett to score out wide.

Piper then managed to use the swirling wind to add the extra points – and from then on, Burnham's discipline kept Chew at bay.

Head coach Graham Buller expressed his delight with his side’s discipline and determination.
