BURNHAM United gave high-flying Staplegrove a momentary scare on Bank Holiday Monday - and could have played a huge part in the division's promotion race, had Middlezoy Rovers been able to overturn league champions Clevedon United.
With Staplegrove needing to match or better Middlezoy's result to secure promotion, Burnham United took the lead through Dan Smith early in the second-half - and with Middlezoy drawing at Clevedon United, it looked as if Burnham may rain on Grove's parade - but the visitors equalised with just ten minutes left to play, while Clevedon United surged to a 2-0 victory over Middlezoy to secure the league title.
Burnham finish the season with a trip to St George Easton-in-Gordano on Saturday, having beaten them 2-1 last weekend.
Goals from Mike Stevens and Anthony Cleave earned United just a sixth league win of the season, while Ollie Morris impressed with a man of the match display.
A final day victory would see Burnham finish the season in tenth place, 13 points clear of the bottom three.
Monday's draw with Staplegrove shows they have the ability to compete with sides at the top end of the division - and manager Luke Hussey will be hoping to see more of the same at St George Easton-in-Gordano on Saturday afternoon.
