FOR years many Brean members have made the annual trip in early August up to Bristol and Clifton Golf Club for the Bristol Tankards pairs event.

Until 2014 success had been almost non-existent, but now they have enjoyed back to back victories, as Graham Foy and Mike Carter followed up club mates Steve Bateman's and Dan Broom's win 12 months previous.

Father and son pairing of Foy and Carter carded an impressive 45 points and also shared the workload equally as each player contributed 9 times being the best hole score during the round.

Success was built on the on a superb outward half of 45 points including a birdie two at the sixth hole. Coming home they added 21 more to the total and in the final calculations it proved to be better than all the other pairs in the large field could manage.

Back at Brean, early riser Phil Barry made the most of the excellent conditions on Saturday morning to post a 41 point score.

This gave him top spot although it was matched by Andy Chapple, who made a welcome return to form.

Barry shaded the back nine countback after Chapple dropped a couple of shots late on. Mike Chaloner was another countback winner as he took third on 39 ahead of 3 others.

Sunday's August Medal saw a glut of low scoring in all three Divisions with two out of the three contests being won with nett 62's, eight under the card.

First in with a 62 was Craig Higgins after his gross 78 had his 16 shots deducted from it.

This gave him the win in the middle Division by 4 strokes from Saturday's winner Phil Barry.

The ever improving Jeff Read produced the other low round of the day in Division Three. The big hitting former footballer overcame a final-hole wobble to hold a three shot winning advantage over Dave Stacey who signed for an excellent 65.

With that score Read's 23 handicap will now be a distant memory as he moves rapidly towards the second flight.

The final winner of the day was Steven Eley who claimed his first Medal win at Brean with a nett 66 in Division One to relegate Mark Hatfield's nett 68 to the runners up position.

Rarely is a countback needed to separate teams in a Texas Scramble but on this occasion the final six holes decided the outcome with the trio of Roger Phillips, Ray Byatt and Barry Fisher just prevailing.

Their net score of 60.4 was matched by Bob Toller, Barrie Yearsley and Charlie Hastie but Phillips, Byatt and Fisher had the slightly better closing holes which gave them victory. Third place went to Chris Stephens, Tony Tissington and Allen Fellingham on 61.2.

Matt Haskins repeated last week’s victory as he took top spot in the Midweek Stableford.

His 40 point return left him one clear of runner up Pete Barton and three clear of third placed Leighton Jenkins.

This week both of Brean Pro’s are in action in National PGA events.

First up is Director of Golf Andrew March as he tees up alongside Club Captain Stuart Wills in the Golfplan Captain Pro Regional Qualifier at Bowood on Monday.

The following day March’s Assistant Dan Keitch travels to the Midlands to prepare for the National PGA Assistants Final which takes place from Wednesday to Friday over 54 holes at Coventry Golf Club.
