Premier/First Division Cup

Purnell Sports 2, Burnham United 4

BURNHAM United continued their unbeaten run with a comfortable 4-2 victory over Purnell Sports in the first round of the Premier/First Division Cup.

Goals from Mike Stevens, Tom Hurley, Dax Vincent and Nathan Bishop sealed the win for United in another impressive display.

With a few enforced changes to the starting line up, Mike Stevens was playing in a more advanced role and was causing havoc in the home defence with his enthusiastic running.

His efforts were well rewarded when he gave his side the lead, slotting past the onrushing keeper when put through one-on-one.

Tom Hurley and Ed Lamb were winning the midfield battle, with Dax Vincent linking up well with Nathan Bishop and it was only a matter of time before the lead was doubled thanks to a coolly slotted Hurley penalty.

The home side made two changes during the break and came out strong, looking the better side for a ten minute spell.

They soon pulled a goal back after a shot and subsequent rebound was brilliantly saved by Dibble, only for the second rebound to fall at the feet of a Purnell striker to slot into an empty net.

Vincent and Bishop were becoming a real handful up front and it was Vincent who smashed home a third after a sublime chip over the keeper’s head from Bishop.

The same pair linked up again two minutes later to see Vincent return the favour for Bishop, who completed a man of the match performance with a well taken goal.

United now looked to see out the game by controlling possession until a rare mistake in injury time gave the home side a consolation goal.
