Chew Valley 15 Burnham 10

BURNHAM were left to rue ill discipline and a shaky lineout after slipping to a narrow defeat at Chew Valley on Saturday.

Beau Dickens crossed for Burnham’s only try of the afternoon and Tim Piper kicked five points to secure a losing bonus-point for the visitors.

From the start, Chew Valley pressed hard but Burnham's superb defence kept them at bay for 30 minutes, until after a shabby lineout Chew Valley were awarded a scrum.

They drove forward before releasing their backs who created sufficient space for their outside centre to burst through and make it 7-0.

Burnham not to be denied and four minutes later they won their own scrum, completed three successful phases before releasing centre Beau Wickens.

The ball was recycled twice before reversing back down the line for the left winger to score out wide.

Chew Valley kicked a penalty 15 minutes later after Burnham transgressed again with hands in the scrum – and even though Burnham did their utmost to get back into the game, the only reward they got was forcing Chew Valley into conceding a penalty and giving Piper the opportunity to reduce the arrears and gain a losing bonus point.

Both sides pushed hard in the closing stages but it wasn’t to be for Burnham, who now sit sixth in Western Counties North.

Burnham host Avon on Saturday before travelling to Barts on October 24.
