NEWLY-appointed Berrow manager Dave Keirle says he is ‘looking forward to the challenge’ of steering his side away from the bottom of Somerset Premier.

The 28-year-old, who retired from playing last season, takes over from Chris Warner with Berrow second from bottom, having won two league games out of ten – and Keirle is fully aware of the task that faces him.

He said: “I finished playing last year as wasn't enjoying it.

I’m delighted to take over - I enjoyed my most successful playing spell with the club winning, Division Two West and Division One as well as two Division Two cups.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge - the table doesn't lie, we are in the bottom four and my aim is to steer us away from there and have a good cup run.

We’ve got a tough start, at home to last year’s champions Shirehampton, but this is what we need, a home fixture in a no lose situation and we are full of confidence.”

Berrow had goalkeeper Jake Barritt to thank for Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Frome Collegians.

The debutant made a string of heroic saves to earn his side a point, while Ash Catlow netted the equaliser late on.

Frome peppered Barritt’s goal with shot after shot, but somehow he managed to keep them out time and time again to take it into 0-0 at half time.

Barritt picked up where he left off in the second half with another fine save, but his resistance was controversially broken when the referee deemed the ball to have crossed the line.

Frome didn't stop there and Barritt, missed chances and now even the woodwork prevented Frome from doubling their lead.

Berrow’s heroics were finally rewarded when midfielder Ash Catlow popped up with a late equaliser to leave Frome scratching their heads wondering how they didn't win this game.
