Somerset bowler Josh Davey missed out on taking home a winners medal from the inaugural Desert T20 challenge after seeing his Scotland side defeated by Ireland in Friday’s semi-final.

Having starred in the win over the Netherlands earlier in the week, Davey was in fine form going into the match but ended up seeing ex-Somerset duo George Dockrell and Kevin O’Brien progress to the final in Dubai.

Scotland fielded first and brought Davey into the attack in the third over, but the Aberdeen-born bowler was up against an in-form Paul Stirling and saw his first six balls cost 17 runs.

The 26-year-old returned later in the innings and picked up the key wickets of Will Porterfield and Andy McBrine on his way to figures of 2-47 from four overs as Ireland racked up 211-6.

Such a large total was always going to be a tough ask for Scotland, but they got off to a flying start through openers Kyle Coetzer and Matthew Cross and were well in the game on 82/3 at the halfway stage.

Coetzer’s departure for 40 sparked a collapse, however, and the Scots ended up losing by 98 runs after folding to 113 all out.

Davey came in at number nine and made one before being dismissed by O’Brien, who spent a brief spell at the County Ground in 2012, while former Somerset spinner Dockrell ended with impressive figures of 3-28 for the victors.

There was no space in Scotland’s XI for Davey’s Somerset teammate Michael Leask, who was limited to just the one appearance in the tournament.
