BERROW fell to their fifth consecutive Somerset County League Premier Division defeat on Saturday as they went down 1-0 at Nailsea United.

Liam Lester scored the decisive goal for the hosts, whose victory ensured that Berrow remain third from bottom – though they do have three games in hand on the two sides below them.

Highbridge Town had a day to forget as they were thumped 8-1 by Somerton Town in a mid-table encounter in Division 1W.

Cameron Wilkinson scored Town’s only goal as they were taken apart by the visitors, for whom Jonathan Watts bagged four times.

Jamie Brown, Joseph Grimstead, Matt Joyner, and Jack Sargent also netted for Somerton.

The heavy defeat saw Highbridge drop a place to ninth, below Burnham United, as a result of the damage to their goal difference.

Burnham United Reserves manager Dave Worthington admitted Saturday’s 5-1 defeat at bottom side Kewstoke Lions represents a “low point” in their otherwise competitive Division 2W campaign.

The 10-man hosts had not won a game all season before the weekend but outplayed United’s second string, for whom Stuart Green’s strike was the only bright spot in a disappointing afternoon.

Adam Brueford scored a hat-trick for Kewstoke, with Callum Clarke and substitute Aaron Bray also finding the net.

The defeat means just two points separate United from the bottom of the table, and they will be hoping that the unexpected defeat represents a wake-up call ahead of the fixtures that remain this season.

Wedmore kept the pressure on Portishead Caledonian Thistle at the top of Weston & District Division 2 with a convincing 8-3 win at Yatton Athletic Reserves.

The result was Wedmore’s ninth win in 11 league games this season, and they remain just three points adrift of the leaders.

Berrow Reserves were leapfrogged in the table by Worle Rangers after falling to a 2-1 defeat against them on Saturday.

They now sit seventh in Weston & District Division 2 having picked up 11 points from their 10 league games so far.

With the top three looking a cut above the rest and Clevedon United A well adrift at the bottom, Berrow could finish anywhere between fourth and tenth.

Berrow Ladies, meanwhile, saw their match with Combe St Nicholas abandoned early due to the rain making the pitch unplayable.
