TWO generations of Somerset spinners came together during the first day of the County Championship match against Warwickshire as Jack Leach was presented with his county cap by Vic Marks.

The award of a cap is a prestigious honour, marking as it does a player's consistent efforts over several years for their county side, and having taken 65 First Class wickets last season Leach is the latest player to be acknowledged in such a way.

The left-arm spinner made his Somerset debut in 2012 and has since taken 118 wickets at an average of 27.21 from his 60 First Class matches, including seven five-wicket hauls.

Marks, who served Somerset with such distinction between 1975 and 1989, spoke afterwards of his pride in presenting the county's latest spin bowling prodigy with his cap.

"I think it is the first Somerset cap I've given - I've given two out for England but I don't think I've ever done it here, so I'm thrilled," he said.

"Jack is absolutely a worthy recipient. We all know what he did last year, which was absolutely terrific, and then - through no fault of his own - he had a very difficult winter.

"He deserves everything coming to him because he's a lovely bloke and a damn good bowler.

"I think he can bounce back [from his tough winter] and you get the sense he really feels at home here.

"He's got the support of everyone, he's very popular in the dressing room and beyond and there's a great deal of sympathy for how he was treated over the winter."
