Chard 2nds 267-7 beat Burnham 224 by 43 runs

A SPIRITED run chase was not quite enough to see Burnham to victory at Chard 2nds on Saturday, as the visitors fell to a 43-run defeat.

Burnham won the toss and elected to field, only to find Chard batsman Harvey Dening in fine form.

The batsman’s superb 142 dominated the home side’s innings, and he was ably supported by Ashley Fussell (34) and Andrew Sochon (20).

Burnham’s opening bowlers Annison (3-61) and Grant (2-27) each bowled good spells while Harris was unfortunate to not come away with better figures, finishing with 1-36 from his nine overs as Chard posted 267-7.

In reply, opening pair Worthington and Harris got Burnham off to the ideal start with Worthington racing to his half century with an array of high class shots through the covers before departing for 64.

Harris also chipped in with a well-made 39 as the away side sensed that a successful chase could be on.

Failures for House, White and Bloodworth put Burnham in a spot of bother, however, with Driver also falling for 18 after a lofted drive was caught inches from the boundary.

Some valiant efforts from the tail, including Berry with 21 and Scriven’s unbeaten 21 from number 10, also could not save the game for Burnham, who fell short of the target required.

Burnham now sit seventh ahead of Saturday’s trip to Shapwick & Polden.
