PROMISING teenage batsman George Bartlett could be handed his First Class debut in Somerset's crunch match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, which starts tomorrow (Tuesday).

The 19-year-old has impressed for the club's second XI as well as the England Under-19s in recent months, and replaces Tim Rouse in the 13-man squad.

There is also a first team recall for Peter Trego, who takes the place of Roelof van der Merwe as Somerset call on experience for the must-win encounter.

Warwickshire are the only side below Somerset in the Division One table, with both sides having won just once in 10 matches this season, and the visitors go into the match 23 points adrift of safety with four games to play.

The hosts are without Adam Hose due to the terms of his contentious mid-season transfer from Somerset, while Jonathan Trott captains the side after the recent resignation of Ian Bell from the role.

Bell remains part of the squad and will hope to improve on a poor season which has seen him score just 374 runs in 16 innings, while his former England teammate Marcus Trescothick is also in need of a score for Somerset.

The 41-year-old, who signed a new one-year contract last week, has scored 387 runs at an average of 21.50 this season with one century, which came against Warwickshire in May's reverse fixture and saw the veteran break the all-time Somerset centuries record.

That match ended in a rain-affected draw, which would do neither side any good should history repeat itself this week, though there is rain forecast for days one and four (Tuesday and Friday).

Ahead of the match, Somerset captain Tom Abell told the club website:

“This is obviously a massive game for us so we have to put what happened last week behind us. I think it’s getting to the stage in the season where we have got to be looking to win every game that we play.

“Although Warwickshire are bottom of the table I think that they are a serious side as well so it’s a tough competition.

"We are all certainly up for it and the batters have been in the nets this morning so hopefully we can put in a big performance at Edgbaston.

“George Bartlett and Pete Trego have been brought into the squad, but we will leave the final selection until we look at the conditions on the morning of the game.”

Somerset squad: Tom Abell (c), Marcus Trescothick, Eddie Byrom, George Bartlett, James Hildreth, Steve Davies (wk), Peter Trego, Craig Overton, Dom Bess, Jack Leach, Josh Davey, Paul van Meekeren, Tim Groenewald.
