CRICKET: Burnham-on-Sea lose out to Temple Cloud in Somerset Cricket League

BURNHAM-ON-SEA’S 1st XI suffered their second successive Somerset League Premier Division defeat as they went down by 75 runs at home to Temple Cloud on Saturday.

Andy Birkett (2-44) and A. Smith (3-57) claimed two early scalps between them but Temple Cloud pair Courtney Forrest (68) and captain Kevin Curtis (67) dug in to frustrate Burnham and build the match-winning partnership.

Burnham fought back well with the ball as a flurry of wickets fell towards the end of the innings, with Peter Harris (2-42) and Rob Driver (2-36) each ending with good figures.

In reply, Burnham’s top three all made starts but couldn’t kick on as Dave Worthington (18), Harris (11) and Driver (17) were all out caught.

Brad House gave the hosts hope with a half-century, including five fours and a six, but the rest of the middle and lower order offered little resistance as Burnham were bowled out for 145 with two balls remaining of their scheduled 40 overs.

This weekend, Burnham travel to Street, who have won both of their opening two matches and sit second in the fledgling league table.

Somerset League Division 4
Huntspill & District 107-3 beat Barrington 101 by 7 wkts

AFTER last weekend’s season opener was cancelled due to unfit ground conditions, Huntspill & District recorded a comprehensive victory away at Barrington.

New skipper Mark Crawford won the toss and asked the home side to bat first.

Opening bowlers Jake Randall & Matt Osmant (2-35) were causing the batsmen no end of trouble on a lively pitch, though Huntspill dropped two catches in the opening nine balls.

Despite this, the pair ripped through the top order reducing Barrington to 42-5 then 49-7 with Randall taking 5-28.

Pippen (23) lead a mini fight back to get Barrington over 100 but a wicket apiece from Shaun Lismore, Thomas Garner and Matt Counsell saw the hosts all out for 101.

After losing Calvin Nayagam early in reply, Nick Slack and Randall scored freely despite the tricky batting conditions.

The pair added 61 together before Randall fell for 20 and was quickly followed back by Osmant (4).

Slack, who played with fluency throughout, brought up his 50 with his eighth four before finishing the game with a huge six to end on 61 not out and give Huntspill a comfortable seven-wicket win with 22 overs to spare.

On Saturday, Huntspill & District face Ilton, who have won both their opening games, at the Memorial Ground.

Somerset League Division 3
North Newton 165-9 beat Lympsham & Belvedere 133 by 32 runs

LYMPSHAM and Belvedere hosted North Newton and, having won the toss, asked them to bat first.

Samuel McCrea bowled with good pace and was unfortunate not to remove opener J Cook, who was dropped at point.

Tom Gooding opened the bowling alongside McCrea (1-23) and bowled accurately giving nothing away.

Gooding struck first, having M Barham caught behind by Peter Hooper and Stone soon followed, caught by Hooper off McCrea.

Gooding (2-16) continued to bowl with good discipline and this was rewarded with the wicket of Street, superbly caught low down by Hooper.

Cook looked to attack the bowling and put away the loose ball well as he and M Barham took the score to 78 before having made his 50 he lobbed tamely to CJ Neate off J Neville.

Jack Luff (2-32) joined the bowling attack and, having found his rhythm, induced Barham to hole out to Gooding at long-on for 23.

The same combination accounted for Gadsby as Gooding took a good catch low to his right.

The home team continued to take wickets as Jack Neville (2-27) had A Giradin caught low down by Kevin Crockett leaving North Newton 106-7.

The lower order mixed defence and attack well to finish the innings on 165-9 as further wickets were shared by Julian Froud (1-30) and Neil Chadwick (1-9).

In reply, Lympsham started positively but soon lost Chadwick (9), who pulled straight to mid-wicket.

Dave Luff and Jack Luff batted sensibly until the former was bowled leaving the score at 35-2.

Gooding and Jack Luff started to rebuild the innings and had to work hard for their runs as North Newton’s bowling attack showed good discipline.

The introduction of Cross into the bowling attack changed the game in dramatic fashion as he had Jack Luff stumped by the impressive Cook for a fine 48 leaving the score at 114-3.

This dismissal led to an incredible batting collapse as Sophie Luff (1) was caught at mid-wicket and McCrea (0) and Gooding (42) were bowled.

With the momentum completely changed, Hooper, CJ Neate and Neville all fell for ducks.

With only one wicket remaining and Crockett running out of partners, he was then bowled to leave Lympsham and Belvedere all out for 133.

IAN Cooke took 4-39 on an otherwise tough day for East Huntspill, who were beaten by 142 runs against Churchill in Division 6N of the Shrubbery Hotel Somerset Cricket League.

East Huntspill made a fine start with the ball, removing the top five cheaply, but Dom Bush’s unbeaten 112 got Churchill out of a hole.

In reply, only Richard Cave (35) made it into double figures as East Huntspill slipped to 84 all out.

Burnham-on-Sea 2nds lost by six wickets at home to Shapwick & Polden 3rds.

Craig Scriven (67) and Andy Ashfold (38*) made useful contributions to Burnham’s 159-6, but Shapwick got home with nine balls to spare despite miserly bowling from Paul Grant (2-12 from eight).

In Division 7N, Huntspill & District 2nds were beaten by nine wickets at home to Butleigh 2nds.

T. Moxey hit an unbeaten 103 as Mark beat Frome 3rds by 43 runs, with M. Corrick adding 57.

Ben Laing’s 5-30 helped Lympsham & Belvedere 2nds to victory at Weston-super-Mare 4ths.

Laing was well supported by Nilanjan Chatterjee (3-25) as Weston were bowled out for 129, and Sam Neate’s 46 was the cornerstone of the reply as Lympsham won by four wickets.

Adam Stringer’s 60 helped Wedmore 2nds beat Peasedown St John by 125 runs in Division 8N - Dave Stone hit 38 from number nine.
