SOMERSET take on Hampshire in the Royal London One-Day Cup tomorrow (2pm start), needing a win to have any chance of progress to the quarter finals.

Somerset sit fourth in the South Group standings going into the final round of matches, with only the top three making the knockout stages.

So they must beat already-qualified Hampshire, and hope that Kent (who have also already qualified) beat Essex at Chelmsford.

Team news

Somerset have named a 13-man squad for the match, with Dom Bess returning after his England exploits.

He is one of three spinners in contention to play, along with Roelof van der Merwe and Max Waller.

Youngster Tom Banton has been dropped after an indifferent campaign with the bat, but Ben Green remains in the line-up.

Tom Abell (finger injury), Tim Groenewald (groin) and Jack Leach (thumb) remain sidelined.

Somerset squad: Dom Bess, Steve Davies, Ben Green, Lewis Gregory, James Hildreth, Johann Myburgh, Craig Overton, Jamie Overton, Matt Renshaw, Peter Trego, Roelof van der Merwe, Paul van Meekeren, Max Waller

For the hosts, South Africa seamer Dale Steyn could make his Hampshire debut, while Liam Dawson returns after injury.

Hampshire squad: Jimmy Adams, Lewis McManus, Chris Wood, Rilee Rossouw, Brad Taylor, Joe Weatherley, Gareth Berg, Brad Wheal, James Vince, Liam Dawson, Sean Ervine, Reece Topley, Mason Crane, Dale Steyn, Tom Alsop

Team form

Somerset go into the match off the back of a defeat at Kent and a fortunate abandonment at home to Gloucestershire on Friday.

All out for 211, the hosts were happy to take a point with the away side racing to 39-0 in six overs, before the rain intervened.

That leaves them on seven points, behind Hampshire (11), Kent (10) and Essex (eight).

Hampshire have won their last two, by five wickets against Middlesex and by four wickets over Glamorgan.

Last year's meeting saw Hampshire win by four wickets, having dismissed their hosts for 249 in 44.2 overs at the Cooper Associates County Ground.

Rilee Rossouw made 156 in the visitors' successful run chase.

What they said

Somerset head coach Jason Kerr said: "We've got to put in a performance to warrant victory, we have to concentrate on ourselves [not Essex's match].

"Dom [Bess] has excelled himself, shown his strengths at the highest level, and the club is buoyed by that.

"The other guys can see a route on the Somerset pathway towards international honours, and it's great to have him back full of confidence."

Captain Tom Abell added: "It's been a frustrating couple of weeks missing out, but I'm pleased with my progress and I hope to be fit and ready for Saturday [the County Championship match with Nottinghamshire].

"We've been a little bit hot and cold in this competition; we've seen the best of ourselves, but in other games we haven't been up to the mark.

"It's been slightly frustrating, but it's a tough competition full of good sides who will beat you if you're not at the races.

"Tomorrow is a massive game.

"I'm confident that on our day we can beat anyone, we just need that consistency."
